Haarlem is a city located on the river Spaarne, about 20 km west of Amsterdam and near the coastal dunes. It is the capital of the province of North Holland, and was at one time was the most powerful of the seven provinces of the Dutch Republic. It is known as a center for the tulip bulb business, and has for centuries been known as the place where moveable type for the printing press was invented by Laurens Janszoon Coster in the 1420's. It received its city rights from Count Willem II in 1245.
